The Truth and Lies of Ella Black
Emily Barr

The Truth and Lies of Ella BlackFrom the author of THE ONE MEMORY OF FLORA BANKS comes the thrilling story of Ella Black.

Ella always thought that she was the one keeping secrets. Bella is her secret: Bella is the dark side of Ella that makes Ella want to do bad things. But when her parents suddenly whisk her away to Brazil, Ella discovers the truth about who she is and it is more sinister than anything she ever imagined. Set against the colourful backdrop of Rio de Janeiro, Ella discovers the thrill of first love, the excitement of a vibrant new culture, and the agony of discovering that her whole life has been a lie. When she finds herself alone in Rio’s favelas, every day becomes a fight for survival. But who is the mysterious person leaving her food and money and how are they connected to her past?

Emily Barr worked as a journalist in London but always hankered after a quiet room and a book to write. She went travelling for a year, which gave her an idea for a novel set in the world of backpackers in Asia. This became BACKPACK, an adult thriller which won the WH Smith New Talent Award, and she has since written eleven more adult novels published in the UK and around the world. She lives in Cornwall with her partner and their children. THE TRUTH AND LIES OF ELLA BLACK is Emily’s second novel for young adults.
